Read on to find out.Hi Matthew, can you tell us a bit about yourself?Over the past ten years, Ive had a variety of roles within the fields of education, special education, human services, nonprofit management, higher education, and developmental disabilities.Some might call me a job hopper but I see myself more as a consultant who comes on for short-term projects. In the bustle of the last ten years, Ive found that my passions have been overwhelmed by busyness, so Im just now starting to tap back into things I enjoy. For example, Ive played guitar and bass since 1997 I sang a cappella in college and I just performed in three separate community theater productions (an original off-off-Broadway musical, a staged reading, and a DC Cabaret show). Im working hard to give myself a life outside of my job.What was the reason you created your resume?I liked the idea of a visually-striking resume and I was tired of my old system, so I thought Id check out what had to offer.I really like the definition of insanity that states, Insanity is doing the same thing but expecting a different result. Ive had over 10 jobs in 10 years, applied for hundreds, interviewed for scores, but still felt myself repeating the same cycles (namely, burning out after 12-18 months and initiating another job search). Did you learn anything from it?I actually teach resume writing to community college students and consider myself a dilettante in the subject. Ive known for a long time, for example, that the bullets under a job title should not list ones job duties but should, instead, highlight achievements. Ive also been using Summary Statements (or Professional Profiles) on my resumes since 2010. So while didnt teach me anything I didnt already know, it provided a new way of applying my knowledge and let me break out of old habits. (Take, for instance, my attached resume that doesnt even include employment history because, in my opinion, it doesnt need to.)What message would you send to other job seekers out there?All a job is and will ever be is a job. Your job does not, nor should, define who you are. Though we live in a world where the question, What do you do? is an accepted pleasantry, each of us needs to be able to respond to such a q uestion with more than a job title or a career track. If my experiences have taught me anything its this what you do to earn money is only a fraction of who you are. It is much more important to be able to express who you arewhat defines you as a personversus just what you do. . Here are some of the points that stood out.How workers feel about job hoppingWhile 64% of employees overall think job hopping can help their careers, 36% are against this idea.Forty-seven percent of people with an education of high school or less are in favor of it, compared to 58% whove made it to college/associate and 67% with an education of university or higher.Outside of the 75% of millennials who look at job hopping in a positive light, 59% of people ages 35-54 and 51% of people ages 55 and older also agree.Management not on the job hopping trainWhile 44% of CFOs said that when it comes to hiring job hopping applicants, they are not likely at all to avoid losing them in the future, 35% percent took a neutral perspective, agreeing that there is no difference if the candidate is the right fit. Just 20% said they would be likely to hire the candidatewith a history of job hopping.There were also results based on a companys size Only 20% of employers with 20-49 employees, and 16% of ones with a minimum of 1,000 workers said theyd be likely to give this type of candidate a job, among other results.Paul McDonald, s enior executive director for Robert Half, commented on the researchWhile job hopping can have benefits, too many employment changes can raise red flags with hiring managers. Professionals should take time to weigh the pros and cons before making a career move, McDonald said. In todays candidate-short market, keeping key performers engaged should be top of mind for managers. Businesses worried about losing talent to the competition should focus on improving corporate culture and strive to be the type of company employees want to stay with long term.The pros and cons of changing jobsEmployees also weighed in on the pros and cons of job hopping.In the positives category, the most popular answer was earning higher compensation at 37%.
